George was born in rural Washington Twp, near Duncombe, Iowa. His father, William Henry Crouse, was a Civil War veteran who fought at Gettysburg. His mother was Cecelia Louise (Smith) Crouse, the mother of 15 children: John Tysin, Cora Alice, Franklin Aaron and Aaron Franklin (identical twins), Charles Lee, George Lafayette, Anna Catherine, James, Mary Rebecca, Eugene Harold, Dora S, Lillian Elizabeth, Daniel Gerhardt, Edna Mae and Henry Dealton.

George married Lillie M. Hudson of Kalo on February 28, 1900 in Fort Dodge. George registered for the draft on Sept. 12, 1918. at age 42. He was tall with a stout build, gray eyes and brown hair. George and Lillian are buried atop a hill in a lovely countryside cemetery with a 360 degree vista of Iowa corn, greenscape and blue sky. Several children are buried in the same cemetery, and two brothers, Aaron and Charlie are buried in the nearby towns of Malvern and Emerson.

George married Lillian Hudson on February 28, 1900 at Fort Dodge, Webster County, Iowa. He farmed near Hastings, Mills Co., Iowa. They became the parents of eight children:
