In 1867 he emigrated from Norway to the United States to LaCrosse, Wisconsin, and moved to Duluth, Minnesota in the fall of 1869, walking the 150 miles from Saint Paul, Minnesota over the military road.
He filed a declaration to become a United States citizen 25 Mar 1870 before the 7th District Court of the State of Minnesota, stating that he was born in Norway about 1841 and immigrated to the United States through Detroit, Michigan in June, 1867.
He married Grethe Olyne Hovden 28 Nov 1870 in Duluth when she was 17 and he was 29. They had 12 children, four of whom died as children.
He owned a grocery store for a long time at 2103 West Superior Street in Duluth. His partner was a man named Stenrud.
"Ole Berg had a barrel of rice in his grocery store, from which rice was sold by the measure, and there was a Chinese laundry in the basement. One day he cleaned out the barrel, and found that the Chinaman had bored through the floor into the barrel, and had been tapping the rice."
He was a Saint Louis County Commissioner from 1896 to 1905. Later he worked as a custodian at the Saint Louis County Courthouse. He also owned several rental properties which he had built.

Obituary from the "Duluth News-Tribune" of Duluth, Minnesota dated May 1915:
Here Before Stage Coach
Ole A. Berg, Who Came to Duluth in 1869, Dies.
Ole A. Berg, who walked from St. Paul to Duluth in 1869, before the stages were running, and established a home here when Superior street was a cowpath and Duluth boasted of but half a dozen houses, died at his home, 317 Twenty-second avenue west, shortly before 8 o'clock this morning. He was 74 years of age.
Interested in stories of the new city that was to grow up at the head of Lake Superior, Mr. Berg left La Crosse, Wis., early in 1869 and went to St. Paul, coming here from the Twin Cities with a pack sack on his back.
His first residence was near the present ship canal at the foot of Lake avenue, where Duluth's few buildings were clustered. There were no streets laid out until several years later.
Mr. Berg worked as a mason in the early days, helping in the construction of many of the city's first buildings. He later entered the grocery business, and for the last few years has been custodian at the courthouse. He was county commissioner for eight years in the '90s, and was a member of the Old Settlers' association.
He leaves a wife, six daughters and two sons. The daughters are: Mrs. W. C. Newark, Mrs. Stella Widner, Mrs. S. A. Rhode, Miss Laura Berg, Miss Olyne Berg and Miss Nina Berg of Charlotte, Mich. The sons are Sidney and Marvin, both of whom live in Duluth.
Funeral arrangements have not been completed.
