Enlisted as a Private on August 10, 1861 at the age of 25. Joined Co. C, 8th Iowa Infantry Regiment on August 31, 1861.

Prisoner of war on April 6, 1862 at Shiloh, TN. Died of dysentery on September 8, 1863 at Camp Sherman, MS.
