Obituary

Mary Edith Williams Peters of Monroe, Georgia passed away Monday, October 25, 2010 in Monroe, Georgia. She was born May 1, 1916 in Lineville, Alabama to William Bennett Williams and Fannie Louise Hines.

She married J.D. Peters of Lanett, Alabama on June 15, 1935. They were married for over 61 years until his death on May 6, 1997. Mrs. Peters graduated from Lanett High School, attended Montevallo State College for Women and received an associate degree in education from Spartanburg Methodist College. She was a kindergarten teacher for many years in Lanett, Alabama, Monroe, Georgia and Inman, South Carolina. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Monroe and loved her family, quilting, playing bridge and the Atlanta Braves.

She is survived by her children, Dr. Mary Ann Nash of Athens, Georgia, James Larry Peters and his wife, Sandra, of High Point, North Carolina and Thomas Howell Peters and his wife, Nancy, of Suwanee, Georgia. She is also survived by her six grandchildren, Alan O'Neil Peters of High Point, Kimberly Peters Stone of Charlotte, NC, Dawn Michelle Peters of Norfolk, VA, Beth Peters Cooling of Camp Lejeune, NC, Amanda Nash of Salisbury, NC; Nathaniel Nash of Chicago, Illinois; Christy Peters Duffy of DeWitt, Michigan and Heather Peters Bokowy of Greenville, SC and twelve great grandchildren: Phillip Tyler & William Thomas Stone; Caroline Elizabeth & John Ross Cooling; Madison Elizabeth Ann & Julia Katherine O'Neil Finke; Michael Thomas, Amy Elizabeth & Rebecca Hope Duffy; and Megan Lee & David Ryan Bokowy, and Claire Alyn Peters. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Thursday, October 28th, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. followed by the service at 3 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, Monroe, Georgia. Interment will immediately follow the service at Westlawn Cemetery in Monroe. Pallbearers are grandsons Alan Peters and Nate Nash, and nephews Jim Peters, Charles Peters, Jimbo Peters, and Burt Gregg, In lieu of flowers, please make gifts to First United Methodist Church, 400 South Broad Street, Monroe, Georgia 30655.
