TECH. KENNETH W. APP
Mr. and Mrs. William App of 1614 Overlook ave SW received a telegram Wednesday afternoon from the war department informing them their son, Tech. 4th grade Kenneth William App, 27, was killed in action Nov. 24 in France. Shortly after receiving the telegram, Mrs. App received a letter from her son which he had written Nov. 13 and his sister, Mrs. William Villard of the same address received the last letter written by her brother, dated Nov. 17 and received Saturday. Tech. App, a graduate of Washington high school, was employed as a welder for the Griscom-Russell Co. at the time he entered service, Dec. 26, 1942. He received basic training at Camp Gruber, Okla., after which he was transferred to Fort Sill, Okla., going overseas in January. He was attached to a field artillery unit. The funeral of Tech. Fourth grade Kenneth William App, son of Mr. and Mrs. William App of 1614 Overlook ave SW, will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Gordon-Shaidnagle-Hollinger funeral home. The Massillon burial commission will provide a military funeral. The Rev. Clyde A. Miller, pastor of Faith Lutheran church, will officiate. Interment will be made in West Brookfield cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home today and Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. Tech. App was killed in action Nov. 24, 1944, in France. A graduate of Washington high school, he was employed as a welder by the Griscom-Russell Co. at the time he entered service, Dec. 26, 1942. He went overseas in January, 1944 and was attached to a field artillery unit. About nine months after his death, Mr. and Mrs. App received the Silver Star which was posthumously awarded to their son. The citation which accompanied the Silver Star read, "For gallantry in action on 24 November 1944 at ***, Technician Fourth Grade App was serving as a radio operator in a radio truck with the Armored division when the division command post was subjected to a heavy enemy artillery barage. Although artillery shells of large caliber were landing in the immediate vicinity of the radio truck. Technician Fourth Grade App did not seek cover, but with complete disregard of his own safety, remained at his radio transmitting messages until the radio truck received a direct hit, killing Technician Fourth Grade App. The fortitude displayed by this soldier resulted in the maintenance of radio communications until the radio truck and radio were rendered unusable Technician Fourth Grade App's valor, courage and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and are in accord with the highest traditions of the military service." The citation which was received Aug. 27, 1945, was signed by Major Gen. Edward F. Witsell, acting adjutant general. Tech. App also received the Purple Heart. Besides his parents, he is survived by a sister, Mrs. Helen Villard of Massillon.
