Purple Heart To Pfc. Charles Baker, Killed In Korea
Pfc. Charles B. Baker, 19 a native of Burlington who was killed in action Sept. 20 in Korea has been awarded the purple heart posthumously. The medal will be presented to his mother, Mrs. Pearl Savage of Keokuk. Pfc. Baker was the brother of George Baker, 1820 S. Main street, and Mrs. Helen Glass, Adrian, Tex. The young soldier, who left Burlington at about the age of 13, attended Lincoln school. He had been in the army about 2 1/2 years and was a rifleman with the 23rd infantry division. The former Burlingtonian had been in Korea about a month at the time of his death. (The Burlington Hawk-Eye Gazette, Burlington, IA, Friday, Dec. 1, 1950, p. 5, Col. 3)
Date of burial was July 24, 1951.
