Enlisted on 8/10/1861 as a Captain.
On 8/31/1861 he was commissioned into "K" Co. IA 4th Infantry
He Resigned on 8/23/1863

In the Mexican War he was in Compnay F, 4th Regiment of Infantry as Sergeant. Major Cramer saw active service in Pea Ridge, Chickasaw Bayau, Arkansas Post, Jackson & Vicksburg. After the War he was elected Representative of his district. He was founder of the Cramer Homestead where Cramer Chapel is located in the North Part of the County.
