~~~CIVIL WAR VETERAN~~~
George Appel was my great, great grandfather. His name at birth was Friedrich Jost Appel.
He came to America from Germany aboard the ship "AHLES" from Bremen, on October 8, 1858.
He was a Union soldier during the Civil War, and has a marker by his stone honoring him as a Civil War vet. SOURCE: "Honor Roll", 1956, pub. by Illinois Veterans' Commission
George Appel married Martha Harshbarger in 1865, after the Civil War was over.
His name when he came to the United States was FRIEDRICH JOST APPEL, which he apparently Americanized to George. He later entered the Army as a private, under the name George Appel. All local and U.S. census records are in the name of George Appel.
He is buried a couple miles down the road from where his wife is buried, in a different cemetery. The rest of his family is also buried where their mother is. George rests all alone in an old country cemetery, honored as a Civil War veteran, but away from his family. I don't know why this is, and probably never will.
A sad story lost to the ages.
Rest well Grandfather.
