Jonathan Heap was born on January 28, 1826 in Kendal, Cumbria, England. He was christened on February 26, 1826 at the Shireside Chapel in Cockerham, Lancashire, England. Jonathan's parents were Robert Heap and Esther Harrison. He married Hannah Robinson (daughter of Peter Robinson and Martha Scott) on April 23, 1851 at the Manchester Cathedral in Manchester, England. They had seven children named William, Robert Robinson, Herbert Peter, Helen Gertrude, Minnie, Amy, and Hettie. Jonathan was a brewer's agent and dry earth closet manufacturer. He, his wife, and daughters briefly lived at 26 Sanford in Muskegon, Michigan around 1888 to 1892 to help with his son William's dry earth closet business. Jonathan died on September 24, 1899 at 5 Charles Street in Pendleton, Salford, Lancashire, England. The cause of death was "Broncho pneumonia cardiac syncope". Jonathan's burial took place on September 27, 1899 at St. Matthew's.
