Birth: Jan. 26, 1806
Suffolk, England
Death: Feb. 12, 1872
Cumbria, England

Robert Heap was born on January 26, 1806 in Lavenham, Suffolk, England. He was christened on February 23, 1806 in Long Melford, Sufolk, England. His parents were Robert Austin Heap (son of Robert Lewis Heap and Jane Ridley or Guy? of Kendal) and Frances Elizabeth Parmenter (daughter of Isaac Parmenter and Mary Charlotte Morley of Essex). Robert Jr. was a joiner and undertaker in Kendal, Cumbria, England. Up until 1869 he operated a joinery with his son, Isaac P., called Robert Heap & Son at Cross Lane and Capper Lane (now Capper Close). Robert married Esther Harrison (daughter of Jonathan Harrison and Ann Taylor. The Harrisons were originally Quakers from Kendal) on July 25, 1825 in St. Michaels, Cockerham Parish, Lancashire, England. They had ten children named Jonathan, Elizabeth, Mary Ann (Mrs. John Wilson), Joseph Frederick, Robert, Isaac, Isaac Parmenter, Frances Charlotte, Sarah Eleanor (Mrs. William Anthony Kelly), and John William. Robert died on February 12, 1872 at 181 Highgate in Kendal and was buried on February 15th.

Note: Robert had three cottages built on Kirkbarrow Lane (next to the house of the late John Broadbent) in 1861. They were designed by a Kendal architect named Miles Thompson. The cottages still exist (see photo on the right). Robert also had other cottages and a workshop nearby. The workshop must have been the above mentioned business at Cross and Capper Lanes. It was south of a garden called "Little Roods" (now a parking lot for St. John Boste Social Club). The information came from 1861 architectural plans held at the Kendal Archive.
