Killed in Action

Killed in action Nov. 12 while serving with the Ninth army in France is Pfc. Wayne Paul Benson, 20-year-old infantry son of Mrs. Mattie Benson of Douthat. Benson left his civilian life as a miner in April of 1943 and received his infantry training at Camp Polk, La. He is also survived by two brothers, Johnny L. Benson, now stationed in England, and Morris C. Benson, with the Signal corps in Italy. (Miami Daily News-Record, Miami, OK, Sunday, December 24, 1944, p. 11, Col. 1)


Remains of County Soldier on Way to Picher for Burial

PICHER, Sept. 16 - (Special) - The body of Pvt. Wayne Paul Benson, deceased World war II veteran and son of Mrs. Minnie K. Benson, 513 North River Street, Commerce, will arrive in Miami on Saturday for servcies and reburial, according to an announcement from the Goodson-Durnil Funeral home today. A resident of Douthat before he entered the Army, Private Benson lost his life on a battlefield in France on Nov. 12, 1944. He was 20 years old. Other survivors include three brothers, Charley Benson of Olivehurst, Calif., Morris Benson of Oklahoma City, and Clifford Benson of Milwaukee, Ore.; five sisters, Mrs. Jewel McGoyne of Commerce, Mrs. Ruth Hawk of Douthat, Mrs. Helen Webb of Salinas, Calif., Mrs Treva Cole of Commerce and Miss Emma Benson of the home. Rites Set Monday For Wayne Benson

PICHER, Sept. 18, - (Special) - Funeral services for the late Pvt. Wayne Paul Benson, World War II veteran, will be conducted at the Goodson-Durnil chapel in Picher at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon. The Rev. Ray Rickner of Wayside, Okla., and the Rev. Jess Weatherby of Douthat, will officiate. Pallbearers will be Galen Hull, Clifton Weatherby, Bob Abernathy, Gene Bagsby, and Gene and Jerry Allgood. The American Legion post of Picher will conduct military rites at the grave in G.A.R. cemetery at Miami. The son of Mrs. Minnie K. Benson, 513 North River street, Commerce, the soldier lost his life on a battlefield in France on Nov. 12, 1944. He then was 20 years old.
