Susan Whitney was born on 24 Oct 1800. She married Jonas Brayton. She died on 22 Feb 1887. She was buried in the Brayton Family Plot, Oakland Cemetary, Manchester, Iowa. Jonas & Susan had 6 children; Matthias, Laura, Olive, Lucy, Henry, and John.
Jonas and Susan (Whitney) Brayton, are both natives of Washington county, New York. In 1852 they left their home in the Empire state and took up their abode in Delaware county, [Iowa] becoming worthy pioneers of this section of the state. [Jonas] died here ten years after his arrival, in 1862, while [Susan] surviving for many years, departed this life in 1887. They were devout members of the Baptist church.

Jonas and Susan (Whitney) Brayton, both of whom were natives of Washington county, N. Y., the former having been born in 1799 and the latter in 1800. [They] were reared in their native county, were there married and in that county resided for some years after marriage. They subsequently lived in Steuben county, N. Y., returned to Washington county, moved thence to Erie county and finally in 1852 came to low and settled in Delaware county [Iowa] where they ever afterwards resided, [Jonas] dying in Delaware county in 1862 and [Susan] in 1887. They always lived on the farm and were engaged in agriculture pursuits. They were quiet, industrious home-loving people, both life-long members of the Baptist church. The Braytons came originally from Connecticut, the Whitneys from Massachusetts; both were of English descent. Jonas Brayton was a son of Henry and Mehitable (Wallace) Brayton, and Susan Whitney was daughter of Matthias and Olive (Doty) Whitney. Jonas and Susan Brayton had six children, as follows Olive, who became the wife of Rufus Washburn and died in Erie county, N. Y., in 1881; Matthias, the subject of this notice; John W., who died in Genesee county, N. Y., in 1841, aged sixteen; Laura, who became the wife of Stephen Potter and died in Delaware county, Iowa, November 14,1885; Henry, who is a farmer residing in Round lake, Minn., and Lucy, now the widow of Smith Bartlett, residing in Buffalo, N. Y.
