James C. Ballantyne was born October 26, 1826 in Roxburgshire, Scotland to John and Janet Turnbull Ballantyne.
The Ballantyne family had joined the Latter Day Saints in Scotland and came to the U.S. on the ship Tyrian landing in New Orleans in 1841. They went up the Mississippi River to Nauvoo, Illinois where the Mormons had settled and built a temple.
After Joseph Smith was murdered the church split and some went with Brigham Young to Utah and some to Texas with Lyman Wight. James went to Texas arriving in 1845.
He married Abigail E. Andrews September 13, 1855 at Mountain Valley, Bexar County, Texas. In 1858 they went to Indian Territory in the Cherokee Nation where he was engaged in the manufacture of salt for about two years after which he moved to Shelby County, Iowa and later to Monona County, Iowa.
James and Abigail had nine children: Joseph O., Joseph M., Omandagus, Nancy M., Jennette C., Robert A., Mary Emma, James O. and Fanny C.
Abigail died January 3, 1889 and James died February 22, 1895. James is buried in the Spring Valley Cemetery at Moorhead, Iowa.
James information was obtained from his biography in the "History of Monona County, IA 1890" by National Publishing Co. James himself was on the book committee.
