Russell Lewis was born 1804, in Greasy Cove, Washington Co., TN.This area is now part of Unicoi Co., TN.He was the next to youngest child of six children from William Lewis and his second wife, Sarah "Sallie" Lewis. The William Lewis family had lived in Washington Co., TN area from the mid 1780's. Circa 1811 the Lewis's moved to Middle TN, settling into the Cedar Creek area of White Co.,TN. The William Lewis family is on the 1820 Census for White Co., TN and includes Russell Lewis. About 1825 Russell Lewis married Delilah Moore, who was from Rutherford/Cannon Co. TN. They eventually settled on a farm with about 100 plus acres in the Mountain Creek area of Warren Co., near Dibrell, TN. They had eleven known children, six boys and five girls. He farmed there in Warren County most of his life. The 1880 Census for the 6th District, White Co., shows Russell Louis (Lewis) age 76, as alone, and having an occupation of a cooper, (barrel maker). The William Lewis Stillhouse, that was registered in the 1820's, could have still been active at that time.
In 1890- 20 Oct 1890 the Southern Standard Newspaper, from Warren Co., TN, had a small article that stated, " Russell Lewis, a very old, and longtime resident of the Dibrell area, was on his way to Texas." Most of the family had moved to Texas or to western regions by this time.
The 1891 Enumeration of Male Voters in Tennessee. The record shows RUSSEL LOUIS, age 87, as a resident of Warren Co., TN. Russell Lewis appears to have stayed in Tennessee, but there is no record of his death or any census records in Tennessee. Still unknown where or when he died.
Martha Rosanna "Rose" Marcum Gebhard, the daughter of Samantha and Enoch Marcum, and the Ggranddaughter of Russell Lewis, through his daughter Rosanna Lewis and Leander Marcum, stated in a letter written in the 1950's that Russell Lewis had lived to be over 100 years. Rosanna Marcum Gebhard lived with her husband, Dr. Gebhard, near Waco, McLennan Co., Texas.
Russell's son, Thomas C. Lewis and his family, had moved to Falls Co. and then later to McLennan Co., before finally moving to Jones Co., in 1897.
