Paul Earl Stigers was born June 9, 1924 in Mansfield, Ohio to Clarence Lynn McMillen and Elva E. (Kitzmiller) Kitzmiller. His birth name was Harry Paul McMillen, and was the youngest of 3 sons born to this couple. Shortly after his birth the three boys were placed in the Richland County Children’s Home. Harry was adopted by Jennie (Spencer) Zimmerman and her husband, Charles and his name was changed to Paul Earl. His brothers remained in the orphanage until they reached 18. Jennie later divorced and married a man named Harry F. Stigers, who adopted Paul. In 1942 at the age of 18 he joined the Navy and served on the destroyer Paul Jones (DD230) in the Atlantic during World War II. Paul loved to sing and had a beautiful tenor voice, during his time in the service he even performed on radio shows featuring servicemen. After the war he settled in Cleveland, Ohio and married Esther Ecke on November 29, 1949. Paul and Esther had five children. The family lived in Cleveland for 10 years before moving to Southern California traveling across the country on Route 66 in two cars with five children, Esther's aunt and a Norwegian elkhound named Toby. The family settled in La Mirada and in 1962 Paul went to work as a letter carrier in the La Mirada Post Office. He died in 1975 and was survived by his wife Esther, children: Paula, Leslie, Gordon, Lorraine and Raymond, and a grandson, Christopher.
