Otho was the son of Hugh Laird, a veteran of the Civil War, and Aletta Brooks. He was born in Nashua and educated in the Nashua public schools. He discovered an early interest in art and attended an art school in Minneapolis. He began a career in the field of window decorating, in Minnesota and Iowa.

Otho returned to Nashua due to his health. He lived with his siter Luna (Smith) until her death in 1939, and then resided with his sister Clio (Grawe) until his death in 1950.

Even though he was in ill health, Otho was active in Boy Scout work for about 15 years. He was also recognized for his research in archaeology and Indian history.

Otho died at the age of 58 years 11 months.
