Ralph F. Mills, 68; was Guard colonel

Ralph F. Mills, 68, ex-Guard colonel
WILBRAHAM - Ralph F. Mills, 68, of Woodcrest, a retired National Guard colonel, died Monday at the Holyoke Soldiers' Home. He served in the Massachusetts Army National Guard and the Connecticut Air National Guard for 43 years and retired as a full colonel in 1991. He commanded the 110th Armored Battalion in Worcester for seven years and led the 104th Infantry Regiment of the 26th Infantry (Yankee) Division at Westfield for six years. He served at the Defense Department in Washington, D.C., and was assigned to the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Born in Springfield, he lived in the Indian Orchard section for most of his life before moving to Wilbraham in 1998. He was a graduate of the University of Massachusetts, the Massachusetts Military College, the Army Infantry School at Fort Benning, Ga., and the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. He was a member of the Retired State and Municipal Employees Association, the 104th Infantry Retirees Association and the Portuguese-American Citizens Club. He leaves his wife, the former Mary E. Lopes; a son, Ernest of Canton, Conn.; a daughter, Debra Tomchik of Wilbraham; a brother, Earle of Springfield; and five grandchildren. The funeral and burial will be private. Calling hours are late Thursday afternoon at Ludlow Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Disease Association, 11 Campus Lane, Easthampton, MA 01027.
