Vernon I. Mills, 59, decorated veteran
Ludlow-Vernon I. Mills, 59, of 137 West Akard St., a decorated World War II veteran and a retired 35-year master mechanic at Monsanto Co., Springfield, died Sunday in Baystate Medical Center, Springfield.
A native of Ludlow, he had lived in the Indian Orchard section of Springfield 31 years before he returned to Ludlow in 1957.
Mills, who served with Army during World War II, saw action in the European Theater and was awarded the Bronze Star.
He was a member of Monsanto's 25-year and Santonian clubs.
He leaves his wife, the former Lia Gopfert;two sons, Harry of Ludlow and Lloyd of Plymouth; three brothers, Theodore of the Leeds section of Northampton, Ralph of Indian Orchard and Earle of Springfield; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be Wednesday at Ratell Funeral Home, Ludlow, with burial in Island Pond Cemetery.
