Don was the oldest son of six children born to Ervin Oscar Frey and Edna Emma Wenzl in Steinauer, Nebraska. His father died when he was just a boy.

After graduating High School Don worked as a surveyor for the Nebraska Highway Dept.

Don spent four years in the US Air Force during the Korean War, where he attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was stationed at Hamilton AFB, San Rafael, California. There, he met his wife Kathyrn Ann "Kathy" Welberg who was also in the Air Force. The couple were married at Hamilton AFB January 9, 1954.

After his discharge from the AF, Don and Kathy made their home in Lincoln, Nebraska. He returned to the Nebraska Highway Department where he worked in Bridge design for several years, at the same time studying civil engineering courses.

After his studies he began working for Capitol Steel & Capitol Bridge Company in Lincoln, where he remained for 33 years until he retired. He worked in the Structural Engineering and steel fabrication department. His career spanned the Interstate highway building period and beyond. He had a hand in the fabrication and erection of many bridges and buildings built in Nebraska and the adjacent states from 1958 to the early 1990's.

Don is lovingly remembered by his wife Kathy, his five children, their spouses and his grandchildren:

1) Craig Allen, and wife Lai Ching Chan, and their daughter Brooke Ellen

2) Mark Douglas, and wife Sharon Lynn "Shari" Hanson, and their sons, Brian Alexander, and Keith Frederick

3) Keith Donald, and wife Mary Lynn Hiemer, and their children, Brendan, and twins Aaron, and Andrea

4) Donna Kay, and husband Fred Hoppe, and their sons, Fritz, Jack, and Dana

5) Raymond Glen "Ray," and wife Theresa, and their children, Sarah, John, and Elizabeth
