Industrial leader, philanthropist, educator, State Legislator, religion leader. William Robert Odell was a leader in the textile industry. As a young man he attended Trinity College in Randolph Co., North Carolina. At age 23 he was asked to serve as a Trustee for Trinity College. The youngest person to serve in that capacity. This was a position he held for fifty years. Trinity College is now Duke University. William Odell was a trustee when Trinity College moved to Durham, NC. He was also a Trustee when James Buchanan Duke, gifted the college to build the new west campus in Durham. With his father he built one of the largest textile companies in the south. William Odell was the founder and president of Cabarrus National Bank, at one time it was the oldest bank in the state of North Carolina. The bank having survived the depression. To serve the mill workers he was a founder of Forest Hill United Methodist Church. For 50 years he served all capacities in the local church. He was for forty years a delegate to the Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. In that time he also served every four years for four decades as a delegate to the General Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. He was instrumental in the re-uniting in 1938 the three branches of Methodism which had split prior to the Civil War. This produced The Methodist Church. He served as a North Carolina State Senator from 1905-1907.
