Birth: Aug. 14, 1915, India
Death: Sep. 24, 2003
Jerusalem
Yerushalayim (Jerusalem District), Israel

Christian Leader, Author, Public Speaker, Radio Teacher. He was a primary leader of the Charismatic Renewal during the 1960's to the late 1990's. Born Peter Derek Vaughn Prince in Bangalore India he was the son of an officer in the British Army. At an early age he was sent to England where is was educated at Eaton and Kings College, Cambridge. There he majored in logic, linguistics and philosophy. At age 23 he was the youngest person ever appointed as a professor of philophy. During the Second World War He served as a medic in the British Army, mainly in northern Africa. Although religion was not an important aspect of his life he took a Bible to study while in the military. During this time he had a significant spiritual conversion while stationed in Scotland. Following the war he mustered out of the British Army in Jerusalem, Palestine. There he met and married Lydia Christensen, a Danish Missionary who ran an orphanage for girls in the town of Ramallah, north of Jerusalem. He immediately became a father to eight daughters of Jewish and Palestinian nationality. During the Israeli War of Independence in 1948 they became trapped between the Arab and Israeli armies. Evacuated from Jerusalem they moved to London, England. Derek's back ground in philosophy and languages gave him a straight forward ability to translate the complex nature of the Christian Faith into practical living. The combination of his logical approach to various subjects and his British accent made him a popular speaker. From 1953-59 he was the headmaster of a teacher training academy in Kenya, Africa. While there he developed a method of teaching which is still in use today. By the 1960's he had moved to the United State where he became a popular Bible teacher in conferences and seminars. From Ft. Lauderdale to Portland, Oregon, to Angola and England his speaking ministry grew. Before the fall of commonumism he was addressing large groups in Eastern Europe. His work had a tremendous impact of renewal in churches of many dominations and places. Derek's study of the Bible lead him to become one of the most respected Bible Teachers in the twentieth century. His radio teaching is still broadcast around the world and on the internet. (bio by: Robert C. Peurifoy)
