Rex Redifer

Rex Redifer, 71, died Thursday, July 15, 2004, at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Franklin. He was a resident of Franklin.

He was born June 10, 1933, in South Bend. His parents were Burleigh and Alieva (Runnels) Redifer. Survivors include two sons, Eric and Chris Redifer, both of Indianapolis; a daughter, Laure Redifer of Washington, D.C.; two brothers, Manford Redifer of Port Smith, Ark., and Rea Redifer of Chadds Ford, Pa.; two sisters, Lorraine Sherman of New Orleans and Jackie Layne of Antlers, Okla.; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey Redifer in 1990, and a brother, Burleigh Redifer.

He attended Indiana University School of Journalism.

He was a longtime reporter for the Indianapolis Star and enjoyed a diverse publishing career.

In 1957, he began reporting for The Bloomington Herald-Times. After a brief stint at the Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette, he was offered the position of sports editor for the startup Daily Journal in Franklin in 1963. He covered sports; wrote stories; took, developed and printed photographs; and edited the section.

In 1968, he was offered a position in Cleveland, Ohio, editing cartoons for the Newspaper Enterprise Association. Then, in 1970, he returned to Indiana as managing editor of the rural electric co-operative's statewide magazine.

In 1972, he began work at the Indianapolis Star and remained there until retiring in 1996. He was a veteran in The Star city room, covering daily news and events, but he was best known for his human-interest stories.

He was a member of American Legion Post 205 in Franklin. He received a Sagamore of the Wabash citation from Gov. Evan Bayh.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving during the Korean War. He was a radio operator and navigator on transport planes.

The Rev. Walter Howard will conduct a service at 6 p.m. Monday at Flinn and Maguire Funeral Home, 2898 N. Morton St. in Franklin. Friends may call from 3:30 p.m. until service time Monday at the funeral home.

The memorial contribution listing for Lois Cody-Adams, 70, formerly of Franklin, was incorrect in her obituary in Friday's paper.
