Edward McGowan, age 100, passed away on Friday, December 5, 2008 at the VA Medical Center in Bedford, MA. Edward was born December 7, 1907 to the late Thomas and Mary (Kerrigan) McGowan in Donegal, Ireland. He immigrated to the United States in 1929. Mr. McGowan proudly served in the U.S. Army during WWII, fighting in 1944 and 1945 in France, Belgium and Germany. He was taken prisoner during a raid to rescue U. S. prisoners in Hammelburg Germany and was freed at the end of the war. He earned the accommodations of the Purple Heart, and Prisoner of War medals. Following his tour, Ed returned to CT where he retired from Winchester Arms after more than 40 years of service. Eddie was a beloved father and grandfather and a great neighbor and friend. He loved to dance and danced to Irish music at a party two weeks before his death. He is survived by his son; Thomas & Sherrill McGowan, of Sudbury, MA, daughter; Mary McGowan & Steven Pettibone, and one granddaughter; Annie Pettibone all of Cambridge, MA and by beloved in laws and nieces and nephews in Ireland. He was predeceased by his wife; Mary Ellen McGowan, and his siblings; Patrick, Lizanne, Rose, & Thomas McGowan. The family was served by Hamden Memorial Funeral Home, Hamden, CT. Memorial contributions may be made in Edward's name to St. Ann's Soup Kitchen, 930 Dixwell Avenue, Hamden, CT 06514.
