Kenneth Wayne Hurst, 69, of Berea, passed away Tuesday, February 22, 2011, at his home.
He was born on September 17, 1941, in Lebanon, Oregon, to the late Wayne and Dorothy Whisnet Hurst. He was retired from the U.S. Marine Corps after 20 years of service to his country, serving during both the Vietnam War and the Gulf War. During this time he received the Navy Achievement Medal for saving a drowning man.
After his retirement, he served for 22 years in civil service as an explosives supervisor at the Blue Grass Army Depot. He helped build three churches and he was an avid University of Kentucky athletics fan.
He is survived by his loving wife, Jannell Louise St. Germain Hurst of Berea; one daughter Rebecca Selby of Richmond; three sons, Kenneth Wayne Hurst, Jr., (Renee) of Richmond, Jeffrey Hurst (Angela) of Berea, and Michael Hurst (Colleen) of Richmond; two sisters, Barbara Siewell and Sharon McCormick; one brother, Richard Hurst; 17 grandchildren and one great grandchild; and his faithful companion, Bo, the wonder dog.
Services will be conducted at the Vineyard Community Church at 830 Eastern Bypass, Richmond, with Gary Payne and Joe Wood officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Camp Nelson National Cemetery.
Visitation at the church. Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
