ONCE A MARINE...ALWAYS A MARINE !
John KUIT was my Drill Sergeant Royal Dutch Marines in the Year 1952.
Since a very long time John was my very good OLD Friend !
Jan Cornelis(Nickname John)KUIT was born October 13th.1914 in HOLLAND.
John was married with Sophia Leticia HOLLANDER and they raised 2 Children,Dorothy and John.
In the year 1936 John Kuit joined as young man the famous Royal Dutch Marine Corps, this Marine Corps is one of the OLDEST in the World because the Birthday was December 10th.1665!
After Bootcamp,John was in 1938 stationed on the Island Curacao,a DUTCH Dominion in the DUTCH WEST-INDIES.
The first 3 years of WW2 John was stationed on the Dutch Submarinehunter "H.M. van KINSBERGEN",hunting GERMAN Submarines in the Caribian Waters.
The Year 1943 John was send to the USA Camp Lejeune,to be trained as "Junglefighter" so John could be send to the Far East in the Battle against the JAPANESE ARMY.
But the Headquarter of the Allied Forces, busy to organize the Invasion in by the GERMANS occupied EUROPE,decided that all the Dutch Marines who got their training in the USA should take part in the Prinses Irene Brigade.
Via NORWICH in ENGLAND John arrived in the Tilbury Docks near LONDON.
The Year 1944 John, together with the 1000 DUTCH Soldiers of the IRENE BRIGADE,arrived on the beaches of NORMANDY-FRANCE.
John told me that after arriving in FRANCE,at the Roadside was a Shield with written" Here lies the GERMAN Butcher of Normandy",this was the Grave of a GERMAN Sniper who killed many Allied Soldiers.
John was also a "Sniper" but near the DUTCH Village OIRSCHOT in the Southern part of Holland a GERMAN Collega, hidden in a Chickenbarn, shot a bullit in John's Leg!
John was brought back to a Hospital near LITTLE WHORLEY-BIRMINGHAM in England to recover.
After the War John was send to the DUTCH Dominion NEW GUINEA in the Far East and later also back to CURACAO.
He was in 1952 Drill Sergeant of Platoon 13 in the Bootcamp of the Marine Barracks "Kamp Woestduin" in DOORN.
That was the Platoon where I took part in.
John was a real "IRON MARINE".
He teached us Discipline and the be clean and proper!
Lessons you could use for a whole Life !
John left the Royal Dutch Marine Corps in 1957 to start a career in Civil Life.
The Year 1985 His dear Wife died.
For all His activities as Marine John was awarded with 12 Military Decorations.
1984 was the year that the Boys of Platoon 13 hat the First Reunion in the Barracks in DOORN and with Sergeant John KUIT
Since then We had some more Reunions, I have been regular in touch with John via the Telephone and visited Him now and then.
