Caleb Sr is my 4th paternal Gr-Grandfather through his daughter Tabitha (Sumner) Burris (1789-1834).
The third of ten children born to Robert Sr and Phebe (Beals) Sumner of Fairfax Co (now Loudoun) VA and later Rowan Co (now Surry) NC, Caleb married widow Mary (Cook) Carson on 9 Oct 1782 at the Tom's Creek Friends MH in Surry Co NC.
Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, Vol I, NC:
"1782, 10, 9. Caleb, Surry Co., s(on of) Robert, m Mary Carson."
Children with Mary:
1) Mary Sumner (b: 1783)
2) Caleb Sumner Jr
3) Tabitha Sumner (1789-1834), m: Bowater Burris.
4) Amy Sumner
Caleb may have been married first to a woman named Sarah, but this is not yet verified. Wife Mary was the widow of Uriah Carson Sr (died 1780) by whom she had six children, among them a son named John who married Caleb's much younger sister Abigail.
By the time the widow married Caleb, her oldest children by Uriah, Sarah and John, were already married. However, her younger children were ages 12, 10, 7 and 5 years.
Note: Tom's Creek Mtg House later changed to Westfield Mtg House.
In 1808, Caleb moved his family from VA to Highland Co OH. In 1829, Caleb Sr moved again, from OH to Hendricks Co IN. Wife Mary appears to have died about 1809, a few days after being received into the OH membership; this is still being verified.
Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, Vol 5, Pg 215; Wife Mary and daughters Mary and Tabitha, received in OH from NC:
"1809, 3, 25. Mary & daughters, Mary & Tabitha, received on certificate from Westfield MM, N.C., dtd 1808, 11, 12."
Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, Vol 5, Pg 215; Caleb Sr and Caleb Jr received in OH from NC:
"1809, 3, 25. Caleb & son, Caleb, received on certificate from Westfield MM, N.C., dtd 1808, 1, 12."
Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy; Caleb Sr and Caleb Jr, granted certificates to move from OH to IN:
"1827, 2, 17. Caleb [Jr] granted certificate to Fairfield monthly meeting, Ind."
"1829, 10, 24. Caleb [Sr] & family granted certificate to Fairfield MM, Ind."
Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, Vol I, Pg 170 and Hinshaw's Encyclopedia of Quaker Genealogy:
"The name was changed to Westfield Meeting House from Tom's Creek Meeting House, when the monthly meeting was established in 1786."
Caleb is believed to have been born in the area of Carver's Creek, Anson Co NC. In 1750, Anson Co was formed from Bladen Co NC. In 1753, Rowan Co was formed from the northern part of Anson Co. In 1771, the northeastern part of Rowan Co became Surry Co NC.
In 1757, the northwestern two-thirds of Fairfax Co VA became known as Loudoun Co VA.
Some sources state Mary's last name was Ballard, but give her parents as Thomas and Mary (Underwood) Cooke...this can be very confusing. Judging by the birth dates of her children by Uriah, Mary was at about 18-19 yrs of age when she married him. Since he died in 1780 and she married Caleb in 1782, it is doubtful she had time for another marriage to a Ballard. The search continues for verification of this Mary Carson's parentage, but to date my research indicates she is the former Mary Cook and widow of Uriah.
