The Tam Family by Fred J. Tam
"Marquis M. Tam was the second of the six children of Moses and Margaret (Hoag) Tam. He was born on the little farm near Rockcreek, January 30, 1856. In that same year his parents moved to the larger farm one mile east of Rockcreek, and here Marquis spent his boyhood and early youth. Marquis did not care to be a farmer though he later owned the farm on which he had been reared. He began his career by purchasing and operating the little store at Brown's Corner. Marquis was of a gregarious nature, and he found life in the little store a trifle dull."
"When the store was sold he moved to Warren, and here he and his brother-in-law, William H. Brown, purchased the Warren Livery Stable. This was more to his liking. He was surrounded by friends and acquaintances, and it gave him a splendid chance to meet the public, something he very much liked to do. After the death of Mr. Brown in 1908, Marquis teamed up with his younger brother, Fred B. Tam, and they continued the business until the fatal [Kingsland Interurban train] accident. For the next ten years, Marquis carried on alone. The coming of the automobile put an end to the Livery Business, and Marquis accepted the agency for the Buick Company. He sold these cars until he retired."
"On November 2, 1892 Marquis married Miss Ella Hough (pronounced Huff)....While on a trip to Macon, Mississippi, to visit their son, Merritt...she became ill. They started home, but she was much worse by the time they got to St. Louis and she entered the hospital there. Here she died on her 46th birthday...Several years later, Marquis married Josie Beatty who had been his first wife's closest friend and companion."
