Birth: 1838
East Poultney
Rutland County
Vermont, USA
Death: Mar. 5, 1863
Fairfax Station
Fairfax County
Virginia, USA

Oldest child of Henry Boyce and Emelia Bethel.
.
A member of Company K, 14th Vermont Infantry, he died of disease during the Civil War following the Fairfax Court House Battle in Virginia. His letter from the field hospital to the Selectmen of the town of Poultney, ensuring the care of his abandoned mother and siblings, is a testament to his kindness and keen sense of responsibility:
.
March 14 1863
"Dear Sir,
I am very sick and do not expect to live. If I don't, I want Hoit Matteson (owner of the farm to the immediate south of the Boyce farm) my brother-in-law, and Sarah, my sister, to go on to that farm and do the same as I would do. I want all my wages used for paying debts so far as they will go - Matteson is an industrious fellow and I think he will take care of mother and do well. My deeds and private papers are at Mr Hickocks, which I want him to have - My colt, wagon and harness I have placed in Mr. Goodby's hands. All the rest I want Mr. Matteson to have.
Yours in debility,
Wm H. Boyce
Received and recorded 24 May 1864 -- B. Frisbie Town Clerk

Memorial Day, 2010 - William, thanks are not enough for the gift you gave to your country; but even more thanks are due the gift you gave your mother. Your concern for her well-being and efforts on her behalf will always be remembered.
