On 8 Mar 1861, Alexander enlisted in Salem, Roanoke County, VA as a Pvt. in Company E., 42nd VA Inf also known as the "Dixie Grays". This Company was led by Capt. Andrew Jackson Deyerle and Gen. Jubal Early. Alexander was killed at the Battle of Cedar Run on the 9th of Aug 1862 at the age of about 17.
