Mount Carroll – John E, Miller, 76, of Mount Carroll died Monday, March 30, 1998 at his home. Son of George E. and Sylvia I. (Rogers) Miller, he was born Saturday December 10, 1932 in Lanark. After graduating from Mount Carroll High School, he served in the Army during World War II. He received the Purple Heart. On October 31, 1947 he and Phyllis Mickle were married.
He worked for the Milwaukee Railroad until retiring in 1983, and was maintenance man for 25 years at Sievert's Pizza in Mount Carroll and Manny's Pizza in Savanna. He was a carpenter all his life. He was a member of Mount Carroll United Methodist Church and Mount Carroll American Legion. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and spoiling them with doughnuts and suckers, and loved to have his house filled with family. He enjoyed playing cards, visiting with friends at the local cafes, shooting pool, going to local auctions, and doing all he could for his family and friends. He spent his leisure time taking long walks and feeding the birds and squirrels. He was a Chicago Bulls fan.
Surviving are his wife; four daughters, Sheri (Ed) Traum of Mount Carroll, Sharon Woodhurst of Savanna, Jeanne (Kyle) Schnitzler of Mount Carroll, and Wendy (Art) Sipe of Mount Carroll; six sons, John E. Miller of Morrison, Roger (Terry) and Richard (Carol) Miller, both of Savanna, Robert, Michael, and Doug (Cheryl) Miller, all of Mount Carroll; 39 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one sister, Charlotte Devine of Mount Carroll, and one brother, Donald Miller of Pace, Florida. Preceding him in death were his parents, one sister, Patricia Miller, and twin sons.
Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home in Mount Carroll with the Rev, Nancy Blade of Mount Carroll United Methodist Church officiating, Burial with military rites will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
