Leon Augusta Bateman was the fifth child of Della and Van Bateman in Borger, Texas. The family moved to Oklahoma City when he was one year old. Leon graduated from Capitol Hill High School. After high school he enlisted in the Marines where he served two years in China. After his time in the service, he returned to Oklahoma where he attended Connors State Agricultural College receiving his Associate's degree, then on to Oklahoma A&M (OSU) and graduated in 1952 with a Bachelor's degree in Forestry Management. Shortly after college he married his first wife and had three children.
He worked for The Cook Paint Company in Contractor Sales before he pursued a career in the Insurance business, first with Mid- America Life Insurance Company in Oklahoma City, then eventually starting the Leon Bateman Agency. In 1968, he ran for the State House of Representatives.
Leon sold his insurance agency in 1971 to pursue his interest in real estate development. During this period, he met and married his second wife, Cecilia.
He opened the first professional Pet Cemetery in 1974 followed by the second one in 1980. He remained active in business throughout the rest of his life.
He enjoyed going to Las Vegas, fishing, a day at the horse track, spending time with his family and both kinds of pie (hot & cold). He had a good sense of humor and was always a willing participant (usually the instigator) in a good prank.
Preceded in death by his second wife of 39 years, Cecilia, one brother and a sister.
Survived by a sister and a brother, his two daughters, Debbie Foster and Carrie Bateman, his son, Tracy Bateman and wife Terri, and his grandchildren, Caleb Foster, Wil and Morgan Bateman and numerous nieces and nephews.
