He was a Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officer and former United States Marine whose kidnapping (along with his partner Karl Hettinger) and murder in March 1963 was later documented in the best-selling 1973 book "The Onion Field" by Joseph Wambaugh which was later made into a 1979 movie (Campbell was portrayed in the film by Ted Danson). California State Route 101 in L.A. was renamed the Ian J. Campbell Memorial Highway and in 2012, Carlos Avenue and Gower Street in Hollywood was renamed to Ian Campbell Square.
