She studied ballet and dancing at a very early age and devoted her entire life seeking the best training and experience from the world's most renowned masters and ballet schools.
In her teens, she was performing in Dallas, TX in "Opera Under the Stars" when J.J. Schubert was so impressed by her performance that he took her to New York. There she began her professional career and became the soloist and prima ballerina for Schubert's Opera Co. She starred in more than fifteen different operettas.
She spent many summers as a counselor and dance instructor at Camp Junaluska For Girls in Lake Junaluska, NC
Her successes led to work with the San Carlo Opera Co. and she toured the U.S. three times, playing in all major cities. At each place she always furthered her study with famous artists and teachers.
She also become best friends with Martha Graham. Their friendship would last until Martha's death
During WWII, she moved with her mother to Palm Beach FL., to make their home. During the war, Virginia opened her own "Virginia MacKay Studio of the Dance" a highly successful studio, and one of many such as the last ones she opened in Arlington, VA and Falls Church, VA.
