Major League Baseball Player. For ten seasons (1953 to 1962), he played at the third-base and second-base positions with the Detroit Tigers, Washington Senators, Minnesota Twins and Kansas City Athletics. Born Reno Peter Bertoia, he moved with his family to Windsor, Ontario during infancy. A standout baseball player while in high school, he was signed as an amateur free agent by Detroit in 1953 and marked his Major League debut on September 22nd of that year. He spent the first three seasons of his career as a utility player, backing up Ray Boone and Frank Bolling. After Boone moved to first-base during the 1957 season, Bertoia played the majority of games over the next two years as Detroit's starting third-baseman. His most productive year was in 1960 with Washington, as he recorded a career-high 122 hits in 121 games. In 612 career games, he compiled 425 hits with a .244 lifetime batting average. He would extend his playing career one year in Japan before retiring. He later served as a scout with the Tigers and Toronto Blue Jays, while also a high school teacher. He was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 1988. (bio by: C.S.)
