While Patrolman Hahnel and his partner were painting stop signs, they stopped a speeding car - placed the men inside under arrest. The Patrolmen were unaware that the men had just robbed a gas station.
With Patrolman Hahnel in the backseat and his partner on the running board they proceeded to the Police Dept. One of the men turned and shot Hahnel. He was rushed to the hospital. The bullet was removed but Patrolman Hahnel died on October 20, 1924.
