Mary Virginia Burkett, 86, entered peacefully into eternal rest on Wednesday, October 14, 2009, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
"Mary Gin" as she was known by many, was born September 23, 1923, to the late Emmett W. and Malinda M. Fortune.
She was preceded in death by her sisters, Josephine "Polly" Johnson and Ruth E. Watkins; and a brother, Emmett W. Fortune II. She was also preceded in death by two daughters, Donna Burkett and Veronica L. Gilmore.
She is survived by two daughters, Dorothea Lewis of Charlottesville, Virginia, and Stella L. Burkett of Baltimore, Maryland; five granddaughters, Revanette, Sonja, Rhondell, Donnita, and Kelly, two grandsons, Charles and Carlos, four nephews, one niece, 12 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and many of other relatives and friends.
Mary was a member of Mount Zion First African Baptist Church where she served as a faithful member of the Ushers Ministry until her illness.
She was a graduate of Jefferson High School where she was a member of the Girls Basketball Team. Her love of sports continued and was exhibited by the excitement she showed while watching her favorite football team - THE WASHINGTON REDSKINS - (in their glory days).
Funeral services were held Saturday, October 17, 2009, at Mount Zion First African Baptist Church, with Dr. Alvin Edwards officiating.
Interment followed at Lincoln Cemetery.
Mary was a resident of the Trinity Mission Nursing Home for the past four years. The family extends their appreciation to the staff of Trinity Mission and to Dr. John Gazewood of the University of Virginia Medical Center for the care and attention given to our mother during her illness.
