Otis Robinson Bacheler, MD, DD, Free Baptist, is the son of Odline and Huldah (Searles) Bacheler. In preparation to become a missionary he studied at Holliston and Wilbraham, MA and Kent's Hill, ME academies, 1835-1839. He studied medicine at Dartmouth and Cambridge Medical colleges. Otis was licensed to preach by the Boston Quarterly Meeting, Lowell, MA, April 1839 and was ordained an evangelist in Lowell, May 7, 1840. Other education: M D from Dartmouth College, 1850; and DD, Hillsdale College, 1881.

He sailed for India, May 16,1840 where he was a missionary at Balasore, Orissa, India, October 1840-52; Midnapore, Bengal, 1865-83. Otis returned to the United States, September 1883 and was without charge in New Hampton, 1883-6. Again he sailed from Boston for India, January 23, 1886. He published 'A Medical Guide in Oriya and Bengalee.''

With his second wife, Sarah, he celebrated his golden wedding at New Hampton, February 26, 1897. His residence was there from 1893 to the time of his death on the first day of January 1901. He and Sarah had 5 children: Katherine E, Henry M, Frank M, Abbie B and Arthur M.

Otis married 1st Catherine E Palmer, at Boston, on May 1840. She died, Midnapore, January 20, 1845. He married 2nd, Sarah P, daughter of Reverend Asa and Esther (Fowler) Merrill of Stratham, at Balasore, India, February 26, 1847. She died at New Hampton, May 14, 1900, aged 80 years.

The funeral services for Otis were held in the Free Baptist Church at New Hampton, Sunday, January 6. Reverend Atwood B Meservey, D D, Ph D, the venerable ex-principal of the New Hampton Literary institution, was to have preached the sermon, but was prevented by sickness, consequently his address was read by Reverend Professor Shirley J Case, of the institution. Others taking part in the services were Reverend J Burnham Davis, late of Ocean Park, Maine, Reverend Arthur Given, D D, of Providence, Reverend Robert Ford, of Campton, and Reverend George L White of New Hampton. Delegations were present from the three literary societies of the New Hampton Literary institution, - the Social Fraternity, the Literary Adelphi, and the Germanae.

Dr. O.R. Bacheler, was an ordained minister and physician, who gave much to India in his lifetme. May be rest in peace.
