Connie V. Gilliard, age 88, of Douglas, passed away Friday evening, Aug. 4, at Coffee Regional Medical Center following an extended illness.
Mr. Gilliard, a native of Ware County, had lived in the Douglas area for most of his life. He was a retired carpenter, and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was the son of the late Dellie Gilliard and the late Mintie Davis Gilliard. Mr. Gilliard was the widower of the late Myrtle Amanda Cason Gilliard and an avid fisherman. He was a member of Eastside Baptist Church and the Adult Sunday School Class.
Survivors include two sons, Reaford and Carole Gilliard of Byron, and Reggie and Marsha Gilliard of Douglas; two daughters, Connell and Vern Engen of Warner Robins and Sandra Holder of Centerville; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 7 at 11 a.m. at the chapel of Ricketson Funeral Home with Dr. John Dobbins officiating. Special musical selections "Because He Lives" and "Amazing Grace" were presented by the soloist, Gayland Collins, with Marsha Gilliard accompanying at the piano. Interment followed in the Hephzibah Baptist Church Cemetery in Ware County.
Active pallbearers were: David Lott, Ernest "Buddy" Ricketson, Jr., Roy Crenshaw, Ray Cason, Joe Cason and Lonnie Batten.
Members of the Adult Sunday School Class served as honorary pallbearers.
Ricketson Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
