Virginia Roderick, 1910-2010
Columbia Daily Tribune Tuesday, November 30, 2010
Virginia A. Roderick, 100, Atchison, Kan., died Monday, Nov. 29, 2010, at a local health care facility.
Graveside services and interment will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, at Memorial Park in Columbia.
Mrs. Roderick was born July 2, 1910, in Mexico, Mo., the youngest of nine children. She celebrated her 100th birthday this past July with a family gathering.
She married Cecil Vernon "Rod" Roderick on July 31, 1930. He preceded her in death.
She was a bookkeeper for a Missouri bookstore and the Missouri State Teachers Association, both in Columbia.
She was a member of Missouri United Methodist Church in Columbia, Kimberling City United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women's Club.
According to Virginia's children, she met "Rod" while they were students at the University of Missouri. A favorite family story is about the night of Feb. 13, when he proposed. Virginia, coyly, responded that she would give him her answer on Valentine's Day. So Rod stayed until 12:01 a.m., and she said, "Yes." They had 63 happy, exciting years together, traveling around the world as well as living in India for a year.
Survivors include two daughters, Sharon R. Vaughn and husband Bill of Kimberling City and Pat S. Farrand and husband Ed of Weston; a son, Edward E. Roderick of Denton, Texas; seven grandchildren, Melissa Anthony, Lynne Harman, Chance Dukewits, Cord Dukewits, Susan Sherrin, Linda Hill and Steven Roderick; 15 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Roderick also was preceded in death by her parents, Edward Samuel Conrad and Carrie Belle (Bumgartner) Miller; granddaughter Dianne Vaughn Meier; daughter-in-law Carolyn English Roderick; three brothers; and five sisters.
