James was a member of Co. F the 6th Tennessee Infantry during the Civil War. He married Lucinda Bolton 3 February 1859. They had two children: Nancy in 1877 and James F. in 1880. He enlisted at Boston, Kentucky the 20th of March 1865. He was mustered out the 24th of March 1865. James was 6 feet 3 1/2 inches tall with a fair complexion, gray eyes and dark hair. He was a farmer. James died at New Comb/Newcomb, Tennessee the 27th of March 1892. J. W. Cates, the postmaster, reported that Wilburn "was found on the side of the Rail Road dead on the morning of the 28th of May 1892. Suposed to have been killed by a train during the night previous. I was present and saw him placed in his Cofin and turned over to friends for burial."
