Wanda was an only child. She and her Uncle Virgil were both raised by her mother Lona. Lona and Virgil's mother died after giving birth to Virgil. Widowed when her son James,Jr. was eight months old, she married a second time, a soldier from Kentucky who was stationed at Fort Wolters in Mineral Wells, and eventually moved with him to southern Indiana.
