John B. Baumgardner is buried in an unmarked grave in Barboursville Cemetery, location unknown, but believed to be near Hal Baumgardner. He was the son of Capt. John Baumgardner & Margaret Rebecca Etter of Wythe Co., Virginia. He came to Cabell Co., Virginia about 1844 and married Louisa C. Baumgardner, his first cousin, and daughter of Philip & Elizabeth Chester Baumgardner. Louisa Baumgardner is also buried in the Barboursville Cemetery and so are at least 3 of their children. All the graves are unmarked.
John B. Baumgardner was a veteran of the Civil War serving as Lient., Co. H, 13th Reg., WV Infantry. He also served as Tax Collector during the time of the Civil War. After the war, John was a tavern keeper in the town of Barboursville. He was elected Mayor at one time and ran a hotel known as the Logan House. This hotel was later renamed the Gibson House in 1882 after the Hon. Capt. Eustace Gibson of Huntington, WV.
John was a pleasant and jolly man. He always had a joke to share with town folks he met on the street. People around the town of Barboursville knew him as Fatty Baumgardner.
