James M. Baumgardner, son of Jacob Baumgardner & Mary Sharitz, who were married in Botetourt Co., Va. and came to Cabell County, Va. (WV) from Fincastle, Va. in the early Nineteenth century. James was born near Ona, in Cabell Co., on the MacCorkle homestead and passed away at his home on 9th Street in Huntington, WV, where he had resided for many years.
At the first outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted in the Confederate Army and served gallantly to the end. He participated in the battles of Scary, Carnifax, Morristown, Lewisburg, Chambersburg and Lookout Mountain. His first service was under General Wise, which was concluded in 1861. He was transferred then to General Robert E. Lee and served under the great southern chieftain until the closing year of the war, when he became attached to Longstreet's army. At the close of the war he returned to Cabell County and for a number of years conducted a hotel at Guyandotte.
At the close of the war on August 14 1865, Wayne Co., WV, he was married to Lucinda Ratcliff. Her name has also been given as Lucinda Ferguson on some resources. They were the parents of three children, Mollie, who became the wife of Robert Thompson Kyle; Harry, who lived in Washington DC with wife Elizabeth and their children; and France E., who was married to George Herbert Tompkins.
His funeral was conducted at the Fifth Avenue Baptist church, Huntington, on October 23, 1914 by Dr. U. V. W. Darlington and attended by members of Camp Carnett, United Confederate Vererans, of which Mr. Baumgardner was a faithful and honored member.
