I still remember that night like it was yesterday. It was about 3:00am in the morning, I was lying on the loveseat in the living room sound asleep when I heard my father unlock the door. With tears in his eyes, he told me mom had passed away. He said, there were two doves sitting on her window sill when she passed.

I was only 13 yrs old, the oldest of 4 kids. My little brother was only in kdg at the time. Back then I did not understand what Breast Cancer really was. I don't think the doctors back then did either. One day she went to the doctors for a bad cold and cough, and then several days later she had surgery to remove a lump and one breast. A few days later, they removed the other breast.

For over a year mom went through chemo & radiation. Towards the end she had burned so bad, they could not give her any more radiation. The cancer ended up spreading to her bone marrow. She passed on April 5, 1977.

Our mother was a very active stay at home mom. She was involved in our church and all our school activities. She loved her faith, God, and her family. In fact, when she was in the hospital for long periods at a time, you couldn't keep her down. You would find her visiting, witnessing, reading, and comforting others who also were fighting cancer at the hospital.

Mother's Day has never been the same for any of us since. However, we know that she has always been with us and has watched over us. We love you mom! You are missed and loved so very much!

"If Roses grow in Heaven"
-Kirsten Preus

If Roses grow in Heaven
Lord, please pick a bunch for me.
Place them in my Mother's arms
and tell her they're from me.

Tell her that I love her and miss her,
and when she turns to smile,
place a kiss upon her cheek
and hold her for awhile.

Because remembering her is easy,
I do it every day,
but there's an ache within my heart
that will never go away.
