South Range -- Martha J. Coponen, 80, a resident of South Range, died unexpectedly at her home on Thursday, July 26, 2001.
She was born May 15, 1921 in Atlantic Mine, a daughter of the late Adam and Emily (Tulppo) Keranen and attended school in Atlantic Mine and Painsdale.
Martha worked for the Stella Cheese Factory in Baltic; Al's Halfway in Atlantic Mine, the Cozy Corner in South Range and was also a caregiver where needed.
She was first married to Arthur Tapani, who was killed in action while serving in the United States Army during WW II in Germany.

Martha was also preceded in death by one son, Richard; seven brothers, George, Henry, Matthew, Einard, Harold, Elmer and William; two sisters, Jennie Karppinen and Aini Keranen ; and a son-in-law.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 30, 2001, at Mountain View Mortuary in South Range with Rev. Lillian Richards to officate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday and one hour prior to services on Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Mountain View Cemetery in South Range.
