Myrtle is my grandmother on my dad's side. May mom and dad and I lived with grandma Myrtle many years while I was growing up. She was my primary caregiver until I was 2 years old.
Grandma was a hearty, self sufficient person and a hard worker. She helped my grandfather (her husband) in the logging and ranching business. She grew up in eastern Washington. Towns I remember in family stories are; Cusick, Usk, Bossberg, Newport, and Oldtown. She met my grandfather when he was 17 and she was in high school. He first saw her one bitter cold day when she was walking home from school and had no gloves. He stopped and gave her a pair of his and the courtship started. They moved around in his logging business and finally moved to Soldier Meadows on Craig Mountain, southeast of Lewiston, Idaho. Finally, they moved to the Russell Ranch north of Weippe, Idaho where they would live for 20 years and raise 3 children. They bought Lochsa Lodge in 1945 and grandma lived there until 1958 when she did a land trade for a ranch on the Clark Fork River in Montana, east of Alberton. She divorced my grandfather and married Mel Armstrong. They lived on their Clark Fork ranch until Mel died in 1987. Grandpa then when to live with my dad in Townsend, Montana until her death.
