Kendall was the son of Sloan Kendall Sr and Marian (Hayley) Childers. He grew up and went to school in Bartlesville, OK and would have graduated with the Bartlesville College High School class of 1961, but the family moved to Spain in 1960 when his father was transferred there by his employeer. Kendall graduated instead from Madrid High School which was on the USAF SAC Base at Torrejon, Spain.
After graduation, Kendall was accepted at Amherst College, but choose instead to attend Carleton College in Northfield, MN, one of the top rated liberal arts colleges in the country. After two years studying nuclear physics at Carleton, however, he decided that he would rather return to a warmer climate and enrolled in the University of Oklahoma where he graduated with a degree in Petroleum Engineering in 1965, and was then awarded a fellowship to pursue his Masters in the same subject.
While at OU he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity and the Naval ROTC program. It was in Norman that he also married Marianna Owen of Seminole, OK. Kendall was commissioned as an Ensign, USN, and upon completion of his Master's degree began a tour of duty with the Navy. Following this, he was employeed in New Orleans designing offshore oil platforms, and while there, two sons were born to the family, Sloan Kendall III and Clark Christopher.
Although Kendall did not graduate with the College High class of 1961, he is considered by that class to be one of its members and a "Wildcat" alum.
