Deceased Name: JOHN C. ASHWORTH, 99 HOUSING DIRECTOR IN WINTHROP
A funeral service will be held today for John C. (Chet) Ashworth of Winthrop, a World War I veteran and former director of the Winthrop Housing Authority, who died Sunday in Whidden Hospital in Everett. He was 99. Mr. Ashworth was born in Waltham. He graduated from Colby College in 1916.
He served as a gunnery sergeant in the Marine Corps during World War I and participated in the battles of the Argonne Forest and Belleau Wood, where he earned a Silver Star for bravery. He also was a captain in the Massachusetts State Guard during World War II.
After playing semipro baseball for four years in Houston, Texas, he joined the Winthrop Housing Authority. He retired as director in the late 1960s.
He was a member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Winthrop Elks
He leaves a son, Richard T. of Springfield, Pa., and a grandson.
Today's service will be at 11 a.m. in the O'Maley Funeral Home in Winthrop.
