Son, Albert, Escapes Injury Although Thirty Feet Away From Woman-- Lightning instantly killed Mrs. Emmaline Marckel, 59, widow of Elson Marckel at about 6:15 p.m. Tuesday as she and her son, Albert, 34, were preparing to leave a field at their Adams township farm where they had been shocking wheat. Although within only 30 feet of his mother, Albert was unhurt. He had just left his mother's side. She had asked him to go back for a water jug. The bolt ripped Mrs. Marckel's shoes to shreds, tore off her stockings and blasted a hole in the ground. Mr. Marckel said he did not hear a sound but when he turned around he saw his mother lying in a cloud of dust. A Defiance doctor was summoned and later Coroner Fred W. Watkins, Defiance, was notified.

The funeral will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m. in the Marckel home atnd at 2 p.m. in the North Poplar Ridge Church of the Brethren. Rev. Jay Hornish, the pastor and Rev. C.F. Blue of Defiance Gospel Temple will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body was removed today from the Mansfield funeral home to the residence.

Besides the son, Albert, Mrs. Marckel leaves a daughter, Mrs. Paul Cooper, 1116 Sunday Street. her husbands mother, Mrs. George Cooper, defiance, died Sunday. Her funeral was held this afternoon at 1:30 p.m. in the Mansfield funeral home and at 2:00 p.m. in the Gospel temple in charge of Rev. C.F. Blue, the pastor. She also leaves two grandchildren, Delores Shirley and Francis Larry Cooper, 1116 Sunday Street; three brothers, Fred Linebrink, Defiance, Rev. Walter Linebrink, Stryker and William Linebrink, Tiffin township; and three sisters, Mrs. Erva Snellenberger. Payne, Mrs. Laura Fitzgerald, Evansport and Mrs. Celia Beers, Bankers, Mich. Her husband passed away Jan. 4, 1920. They were married Dec. 24, 1902 and lived their entire married life on the present farm, route 3, Defiance. Mrs. Marckel also was preceded in death by the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Anna Snellenberger, Ed Linebrink, Elon Linebrink and Clarence Linebrink. Mrs. Marckel was born Jan. 29, 1881 in Tiffin Township, a daughter of Louis and Sarah Linebrink. -Crescent News, July 24, 1940
