James E. Deck, 74, of Noble, IL, died May 28, 2000, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes, IN.

Mr. Deck was born July 5, 1925 in Madison Township, Richland County, IL, the son of Cloyd A. and Viola J. Enochs Deck. He married Doris L. Jackson July 3, 1948 in Olney.

He attended eight grades at Oregon Country School, six miles south of Olney.

He was a retired cement finisher and was a member of Union Local O.P. and C.M.I.A. for more than 35 years, where he served as president, secretary and business agent.

He and his parents owned and operated the Elbow General Store and he also farmed.

He served in the United States Army in World War II from 1943 until 1946. He served in 279th Infantry in Guadalcanal and the Solomon Islands, and was the 477th Quartermaster Supply Company in Hawaii.

He was a member and trustee of the South Freedom Conservative Christian Church.

He loved to hunt, fur trap, fish, garden, watch NBA basketball and attend church. He was known as the CoonHunter for many years.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Diane Deck; a son, Daniel Deck; a sister, Virginia L. Baker; an aunt; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Preceding him in death were his parents, two daughters, Julie Ann (an infant) and Linda Sue Deck who passed away at age 17.

Funeral services were held at Summers-Kistler Funeral Home with burial in Haven Hill Cemetery in Olney.

Memorials to the American Heart Association or South Freedom Church.

SERVED IN THE 279TH INFANTRY, 477TH QUARTERMASTER SUPPLY COMPANY IN THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS, SOLOMON ISLANDS, AND GUADALCANAL. RECEIVED WWII VICTORY RIBBON, GOOD CONDUCT MEDAL, AND ASIATIC-PACIFIC CAMPAIGN MEDAL.
